Vitamin B12 is a vitamin that is naturally present in some foods (mostly animal products), added to others, and available as a dietary supplement and a prescription medication.  Vitamin B12 is required for proper functioning of many cells in the body.  Some people do not get enough Vitamin B12 in their diet and others may have problems with absorbing this vitamin from the stomach and intestines.  As a result, vitamin B12 deficiency is common, affecting between 1.5% and 15% of the general population.

Because Vitamin B 12 is important to many different areas of the body, Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause a wide variety of symptoms including anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, difficulty maintaining balance, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, and soreness of the mouth or tongue and weight loss.  Some individuals can experience symptoms related to nerve function such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet.

Individuals who have trouble absorbing vitamin B12 from foods, as well as vegetarians who consume no animal foods, might benefit from vitamin B12 injections since this method bypasses potential barriers to absorption.
