Sexual health is a big concept covering far more than avoiding disease or unplanned pregnancy. It includes the ability to embrace and enjoy our sexuality throughout our lives. What sex is differs depending on who you ask but the World Health Organization (WHO) came up with a definition of sexual health which states: “sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.” According to the WHO, Sexual health also includes “the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.”
Because sexuality involves so many aspects of being (physical, emotional, relationships etc.), problems related to sexual health can be challenging. In addition, this is an area most of us receive little education about and seldom discuss with others. Being shy or embarrassed can also keep questions unasked. Common questions about sexual health include:
- I’ve never had an orgasm. How do I get one?
- Is something wrong with me that I don’t orgasm during sex with my husband?
- I’ve stopped being interested in sex. Is there something I can do?
- What do I do if I want sex more than my husband?
- I have pain during sex. Is that normal?
