Articles in the news this week have been seemed tailor made to reinforce the talk I gave last week. I came across an article today on Alternet where the author beautifully highlights the difference between health insurance and health care as he talks about his experience with malignant melanoma. Simply, health insurance is a contract between you and a third party where you agree to pay a small amount every month for services you may not use in exchange for their payment of potentially larger amounts if and when needed. Healthcare encompasses all the prevention, testing, treatment and care you receive from clinicians for health concerns or problems.
He writes:
” …although it (Obamacare) will help nearly everyone get some kind of insurance, it won’t help everyone get good insurance, the kind that saved me. Some of them will look at their strange asymmetric mole and their $2000 deductible and won’t be $2100 worth of worried until it’s too late.”
